Chapter 32: Tara

Karma

I waited until most of the office staff had gone to collect their lunches from the canteen before entering the code I wasn’t supposed to know by heart. The one that opened the confidential filing cabinet. I’d seen members of the people team stabbing in the code in passing, and as I’ve said before, I’m good at maths so I never forget a number. I didn’t know Sean’s last name at the time but I soon found him under new starters. That’s when I noticed the surname, Hunter.

‘You couldn’t make it up,’ I seethed, thinking back to that night when my attacker—the predator—had hunted me, the prey, down, waiting until I was alone to make his move.

I didn’t have much time before the others returned to their desks with their plates of food, so I skim-read the document until I found what I was looking for, the disclosure at the bottom of the job application. Sean had ticked the box claiming he had no unspent convictions. This was a lie: I knew he would never have got a job here if they knew about his past.

Back when I knew him, he was a known druggie who was always in trouble with the police. I felt a smug rush of adrenaline when I Googled his name on my phone and the results popped up instantly to condemn him. Sean Hunter had served time in prison on three separate occasions, racking up an ugly criminal resume of theft, robbery, and drug dealing. The last time he’d been inside was six years ago when he served four years. Bingo. Got him.

It was Dino who’d told me that you had to disclose any unspent criminal convictions to an employer if they asked you, especially if you had been in prison within the last four years, otherwise you could be dismissed if they later found out you’d lied. Dino had looked the subject up before applying for a job here. He’d been arrested for stealing a car as a teenager years before and was terrified it might come back to haunt him. He wasn’t sure if he needed to notify his employer or not. It turned out he didn’t. But that wasn’t the case with Sean.

I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to do with this information until I ran into Sean in the canteen. When I first saw him, he was sitting alone, tucking into a plate of freshly prepared organic food cooked by our team of chefs. Although our canteen is heavily subsidised, Dino and I still can’t afford to eat here and have to make do with a packed lunch. It annoys me that our hardworking, clean-living little family is worse off than him.

I continued to observe him out of the corner of my eye as I poured myself a strong black coffee. He didn’t pay any attention to me or anyone else, so I assumed he didn’t know who I was. Good. I was glad about that. It gave me the chance to study him without fear of him approaching me.
